Grey The New Black

There are visibly more people wearing their grey hairs confidently these days. Whether it is mid-length or pixie cut, seniors are taking on that liberating move to stop dyeing their whites and persevered with the transformation to make the proud statement of being gloriously grey.

Trendy and gorgeous shimmering grey hairstyles are catching on as fast as digital payment gateways.

If the Covid is the reason for people to shop online and use payments apps, the MCO has also compelled them to leave their greys on when they could not do the regular visits to the hairdressers to dye them.

The period of confinement gave them time to get used to the transition stage of being partially grey. And, as one pixie grey head described: “It’s liberating and somehow because of the MCO I felt I needn’t have to apologise for the mess on my head!”

This has certainly caught on as many, in their late 30s and 40s, who have started to grey before their time, have decided to wear their headful of glorious grey confidently

Depending on the culture, there can be different perceptions of a headful of grey. It can represent maturity and wisdom or ageing that comes with weakness, being old fashion and ‘season past’. Generally, it is a case of vanity that gets them dyeing their hair every other month particularly with mid life crisis creeping in.

However, the confinement during the MCO had provided a safe opportunity to experiment with this life changing (you will never know what impact it would have on your social life) experience as you were going nowhere.

As the curlers of change begin to turn with more people letting go of the tube of dye and brush, Episodeplus.com caught up with some who gave their reasons on why they had opted for that shimmering hue.

I decided to go ‘grey’ because I find it too troublesome to colour it as I DIY and had to do it quite often. It is expensive to go to the salon. Initially it was quite difficult as the grey and the black were very distinct. I persevered. So the  grey grew and I kind of gotten used to it.

The comments I’ve got were very encouraging and I have a lot of positive feedback now as I have a head full of grey hair.

I decided to keep it grey because I believe in ageing gracefully. Besides, I am a fan of George Clooney. Always look real, look good and think good.

I love my grey hair.

It started with covid in 2020. I couldn’t dye or cut during the MCO. I looked old and messy. I had part of it natural grey, part of it faded brown and yellowish. I left it as it was. After the lockdown was over, I researched on hairstyles that would suit grey. Pixie it was! Made a bold move and cropped off bottom half of my hair and long bangs. A refreshing new look!

I had so many compliments from my patients, family and friends.

I started greying at 30 plus. At 40, my hair was all grey but I dyed it. I decided to stop dyeing my hair when I menopaused and it was also during the Covid MCO. I decided to transition. People around me are cool. They don’t say I look old and I think the grey hairstyle suits me. I don’t need to colour my hair and risk damaging the roots.

I dont need to look young by colouring my hair and I also do not have to deal with receding hairline. Embracing how I look naturally gives me healthier hair and this is what I want to do. I carry myself very confidently and I am not affected by what others say. I don’t need to explain to anyone.

I got tired of dyeing my hair. At the same time, I retired from workforce (in a big corporation) so I didn’t feel the need to look “good”. I felt it was time to age gracefully and besides, I like the various shades of grey. I didn’t receive any negative comments from anyone so that’s good.

Mine was out of necessity. I had scalp allergy due to dyes. The benefits of going grey are freedom, saves time and money. I received many compliments from family and friends.  – JE Tan
