Generational Learning: Premium Chickens

Ryan Lee and Joshua Aaron Lopez transitioned from Economics and Marine Biology to free-range chicken farming, mentored by poultry expert Nizam Yaacob.

Chickens were the last thing on their minds when Ryan Lee and Joshua Aaron Lopez went off to pursue their degrees in Economics and Marine biology respectively.

But today you can see them sweating it out at the farm chasing after their feathered friends and making sure they are happy and comfortable.

From their noble and idealistic intention to venture into urban farming they began with aquaponics which didn’t turn out well. Chicken was a coincidence and they introduced them into the farm to maintain the grass on the land.

Until they met Cikgu Nizam who mentors them in rearing free range premium chicken. Nizam Yaacob, 46, from Anizam Agro has been magnanimously imparting his skills in poultry farming to Ryan and Joshua.

“They are both eager learners and apply everything I taught them. In turn I also feel motivated to teach them all the skills to get their business going successfully,” said Nizam.

With more than 30 years experience in the industry and heading one of the better known companies in poultry and feed in the country, Nizam hopes that whatever skills that he has taught the younger farmers would be carried on from generation to generation.
